Latin Quotes As Writing Prompts

Almost anything can become a writing prompt for a teacher. For example, if you would like to combine history and writing, these quotes might be a good link between the two areas. The students can write about what these Latin quotes mean to them and if they agree with them. The prompts are aligned with Common Core standards and ask the students to use higher order critical thinking skills.

Using Latin Quotes to Teach History and Science

If you want to tie in history, you can discuss just how long ago these quotes were said. I have noticed many of my students have no concept of time. I would suggest you take a few minutes to clarify time periods in history. It is time well spent in my opinion. Many of my students came to my class thinking dinosaurs existed a hundred years ago.

Teaching with these quotes can also be used to explain ancient Greek and Roman influences on the English language. If you want to include science, include Latin root word elements in scientific names or even the names of the planets.
